With Gebbie out, we can get a cabinet AIDS czar

by Joe Carroccio

As we have all heard by now, the U.S. AIDS policy coordinator, Kristine Gebbie, has resigned her position as of August 2. She said that the position is to weak to be effective, and that there was a misunderstanding by the public as to what her powers as AIDS czar would be. The perception was something like the drug czar, who has sweeping authority to make decisions on national policy surrounding the war on drugs.

What failed to materialize during Gebbie's tenure was the position being made a cabinetlevel job. So, while the

Lowell Weicker, ex-governor of Connecticut, has expressed interest in the position, off the record, but only if it's cabinet level. We told you about Weicker some time ago a kick-ass kind of guy who can get things done. We'll be lobbying our reps in Washington to call on Congress to make a resolution for a cabinet-level AIDS czar.

What can you do to help? Write, call and fax your reps in D.C. You can reach them at 202-224-3121. Call Clinton's chief of staff, Leon Panetta at 202-4566797 or fax him often, at 202-4562883. Write to Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health

title AIDS czar sounded impressive, it was largely a smoke-screen to pacify AIDS activists and to fulfill one of President Clinton's campaign promises, however feebly.

What now? Now we have to drop everything and make this position a cabinet-level job. Whether you are a member of ACT UP or the Unitarian Church, making this job cabinet-level is crucial, and we all agree on this point. So let's put as much effort into this as we did into the military ban issue, (more, because we lost that fight). Once again if we work together hard and fast and now, we believe we can make this position one with some teeth.

& Human Services, at 200 Independence Ave. S.W. Room 615, Washington D.C. 20201. Call the Domestic Policy Coordinator, Carol Rasco. More numbers are available through ACT UP.

And most important, join ACT UP August 2 at the Federal Building at East 9th and Lakeside Ave in Cleveland, at 11:30a.m. for a demonstration demanding Congress make the resolution creating a cabinet level AIDS czar now. This is an opportunity we didn't think we'd get. Let's do what we can with it now. If you have any questions, call the ACT UP workspace at 621-2233. ACT NOW. ♡

Volunteers sought for AIDS services

As HIV and AIDS continue to spread locally, the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland needs people like you to help expand our reach within the community.

Some of the areas in which we need volunteers are the Buddy Program, fundraising, the Speaker's Bureau, community education, administration, the AIDS Walk, and our member's newsletter.

Our next volunteer orientation is set for Thursday, August 18 at 6 pm. The session will be held at the Taskforce office at 2250 Euclid Avenue, near Cleveland State University in downtown Cleveland. Call 621-0766 for more information and a volunteer packet.

ventilation, parking, accessibility to public transportation, and barrier-free access. We're also looking for office and lounge furniture, computers, work stations, phones, and volunteers to help us move.

Can you offer your professional services or advice with regard to the move? Or would you like to serve on our relocation committee? Call Chrisse France at 621-0766.

TASKFORCE

OF GREATER CLEVELAND

We've hung out a new sign. Notice the new logo gracing this column? Deborah MacLean Karson of MacLean Eckert Communications designed this new look to go with our new name. In addition to the logo, Deborah has done layout and design for the AIDS Walk and our monthly Volunteer Update newsletter, all at no charge to the Taskforce. She also serves on the Taskforce's volunteer committee for social events. Thanks to Deborah for giving so freely of her time and talents.

Site unseen. As we've said in this column in the past, the Taskforce is seeking a new location for our office. Our needs include 7,500 square feet, private meeting rooms, a conference room, security, adequate

Pier review. Our benefit bash on the William G. Mather was hugely successful, raising over $17,500 for AIDS support services from the 426 revelers who attended. Mary Strass-meyer had some nice things to say about the party in her Plain Dealer "Mary, Mary" column.

A grant affair. At the annual Women's Community Foundation Grant Awards Ceremony on June 13, the Taskforce received a $5,000 grant for direct services to women with HIV/AIDS in our community. Executive Director Chrisse France, Board Member Charlotte Ivey and Contributions Coordinator Fran Petonic were at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to accept the grant. We extend a sincere thank you to the Foundation.

Walk like you care. Plan on being with us for the fourth annual AIDS Walk, set for Sunday, September 25 at Edgewater Park.
